Costa Rica is located in Central America between the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean. It has an extension of 51,000 km².
     It’s world widely known for her democratic traditions and peculiar climate throughout the year. There are two specific seasons: The sunny and dry season we refer to as summer, that is just warm and mild; and the rainy season, as winter. As its obvious, we don’t have extreme weather in the country throughout the year.
     Our country offers to visitors the opportunity to know her beautiful National Parks, her bio diversity and ecological enrichment, the tourist centers, and so on.

Provinces of Costa Rica

  • San José:

The biggest and the most populared city in the country. San Jose hall all the facilities, such as several shopping malls and restaurants, both international and traditional. The best museums of the country are in San Jose. Among them, "Museo de Arte Costarricense", where the most important plastic masterpieces are exhibited, also for the ones that travel with their children "Museo de los Niños" where you can learn in a fun and interactive way. To learn about the pre Columbian culture "Museo de Jade" should be visited, with the world wide largest collection of pre Columbian Jade, "Museo de Oro", with a pre Columbian gold exhibition both unique and impressing, and "Museo Nacional", where you can learn about that and other epochs of the Costa Rican history.

  • Cartago:

Located in the center of the country, just at the east of San Jose is the province of Cartago. Out of the city, in cantón Paraíso and in its surroundings, there are warmth landscapes -that's why there are several sight seeing places — and many options for tourists. Highlighting "Jardín Botánico Lankester", internationally known for its outstanding collections of tropical plants, mainly orchids; Orosí town, for ¡ts small colonial church, historical colonial and architectural monument; Cachí town for the many places for trout fishing and its dam, which is commonly visited by the Costa Ricans.

Heading towards the Caribbean, cantón de Turrialba highlights one of the most popular places in the country for adventure tourism in nature, specially rafting. Here is the imposing Turrialba Volcano, at the National Park of its same name. Here, tourists can descend up to the crater and enjoy high forests, and also the vegetation on the high barren plain. Also, in Turrialba is Guayabo National Monument, the most important archeological site in Costa Rica.

  • Heredia:

Heredia, at the north of San José, is the smallest province in Costa Rica. Among its economic activities, there is flower growing; other of the crops of Heredia is coffee, due to this, large crops of this fruit make part of the landscape of some Heredia towns. Coffee has had a huge importance in the history and development of Costa Rica. Some of the farms offer guided visits so that the tourists can know more about coffee and the process that takes it from the fields to the table.

In cantón de Santo Domingo, is lnbio Parque, that with samples of the different kinds of forests present in the national territory, butterflies exposition, and information about flora and fauna of the country, among other attractions, is an excellent introduction to Costa Rican nature. There are also attractions for the youngest ones, which makes it a place where all the family can learn and have fun.

  • Limón:

Limón is ah over the Caribbean littoral in Costa Rica. This province is the most populated by black people in the country. One of the principal economic activities in limón has
been the banana production, so when going through this region, the crops of this fruit make part of the landscape of many of its little towns.

At the north side of the Caribbean Coast, near the border with Nicaragua is "Barra del Colorado Wildlife Refuge", one of the best places to practice sports fishing. Next to it is
the famous Tortuguero National Park. It is made up of beaches, lagoons, woods, swamps, mangroves and a series of beautiful canals that tourists sail to enjoy the landscape and see the animals, specially the birds. Southern Caribbean is characterized by a series of beautiful beaches where the jungle gets together with the ocean in an extraordinary landscape.

  • Puntarenas:

Puntarenas is the biggest province in Costa Rica. Although it is a very narrow area, its territory makes up about two thirds of the Pacific Littoral, due to this there are many beautiful beaches as well as important national parks. To the south there is a quantity of beautiful beaches, such as Tivives, Herradura, Jacó and Hermosa, all of them very popular among surfers. In Jacó, there is also a prosperous town with excellent tourist facilities, which ¡s rapidly rowing.

Puntarenas is the province with the most islands. Highlighting Del Caño Island, which in front of the picturesque Drake Bay is a biological and architectonical reservoir, and Coco’s Island, which is further and more difficult to access, is one of the nature marvels in the country. Both are paradises for diving and snorkeling.

  • Guanacaste:

Guanacaste, the second biggest province. Nowadays, this province is recognized for its beaches, its excellent tourist facilities, ¡ts national parks, and for being the cradle of many of the dances, food, and traditions that make part of the national folklore.

What makes Guanacaste most popular is its beautiful beaches that are in its 200 kilometers of coast, that with a much sunnier and drier weather than in the rest of the country, bring locals and foreigners. There are lonely and crowded beaches, peaceful or with active night life; of wild waves that invite to surf, or with calmed, tranquil, and safe waters for the entire family; with fancy and huge resorts and with simple and cheap cabins; of black or white sand; the offer is as wide as imagination can be.

  • Alajuela:

At the north of San José and at the west of Heredia is Alajuela, that with huge plains, beautiful mountains and volcanoes, is one of the largest and most varied provinces in Costa Rica.

La Fortuna, whose main attractiveness is Arenal Volcano, is also in San Carlos. This is a perfectly visible cone from any part of the town. Since it is active, when it is not cloudy, it is very common to see the gases that come out from its top and the volcanic material that comes down through its sides. lf this ¡s impressive at day time, it is even more at night, when the red color of fire lava is seen.

Asides from the volcano, La Fortuna is a total tourist town where all kinds of activities in Costa Rica’s nature can be practiced; to visit La Fortuna Waterfall, one of the most beautiful in the country, to walk through hanging bridges high in the forest; to take a ride on cable cart; to know a small Indian museum; or to walk through any of the private reservoirs. Among many other options, one of the most popular ones is to take a bath in the thermal waters in any of the several places that offer this service.

Located 18 kilometers away from La Fortuna is the biggest lake in Costa Rica, el Arenal, that is not only beautiful but also perfect for activities such as fishing, kayaking, windsurfing, and boating.
